Oddball opened its doors in 1997, launching what would become known as The Big Foot Revolution. Founded by brothers Seth and Zac Longaker — two self-proclaimed “oddballs” with a shared frustration — the brand was born out of a very real problem: finding big shoes for their size 16 feet.
“I remember when we were kids, our mom used to threaten to take us to the foot doctor,” recalls Seth. “She said she wanted to have our toes shortened.” While that might sound extreme, the truth is, Seth and Zac were born with unusually large feet. Both over six-foot-six and wearing size 16 shoes, the brothers faced teasing from an early age. “I knew I was a little odd when I was taller than my third-grade teacher,” says Zac.
Rather than accept the status quo, the entrepreneurial brothers turned their challenge into an opportunity. Armed with business degrees from the University of San Diego, they launched the Oddball Shoe Company in 1997.
“The idea really hit me when I was in a shoe store trying to buy a new pair,” says Zac. “I asked for a name-brand shoe, and the clerk laughed. Then he brought out some old burgundy shoes from the ’60s and wanted $500 for them. That’s when it clicked — there was a need for a shoe company that offered quality, name-brand footwear for people with big feet.”
Seth added, “Our concept was simple: a place with a great selection, a cool vibe, and a strong focus on customer service. A place where size really does matter.”
And they delivered. From their first small shop on Glisan Street in Northwest Portland, Seth and Zac scoured the market for well-made, affordable large-size shoes. What started as a niche business quickly gained momentum, attracting customers from around the world who had long struggled to find footwear that fit.
Over the years, Oddball has continued to grow and evolve:
  • 2018: Oddball continues to lead the market in large shoes and tall apparel, constantly searching for new products to serve the big-footed community.
  • 2017: The brand celebrates its 20th anniversary and launches a new line of XXL hats.
  • 2011: Expansion into socks, apparel, and insoles to offer even more options for tall men.
  • 2010: Due to continued growth, Oddball relocates to its current location at 1801 NW Thurman Street in Portland, Oregon — a spacious distribution center and showroom.
  • 2005: The company moves to a larger space on NW Marshall Street. Word of mouth spreads globally, and international sales soar.
  • 1997: In July, the original Oddball store opens on Glisan Street, offering a carefully curated selection of quality big shoes at fair prices.
